Scenario guide
Packing lists for kids & family trips
Same vacation, different bag — kids need snacks, spare outfits, and entertainment parents forget.
A kids packing list is not a shorter adult list. You are packing for messes, meltdowns, sunburn, and hours in a car seat — while still fitting everything in bags you can carry.
Start with the trip type: beach days need sunscreen and spare swimsuits; tent camping with kids needs their own sleeping bag and headlamp; Disney days need comfortable shoes and a charged phone for mobile order.
Flying internationally? Use the flying with kids list — carry-on sleep kits and checked backups are split for you.
Summer camp is different again — that is a labeled-clothes cabin list, not a family vacation. Pick the guide below that matches your trip.
August back-to-school? Our K-12 school supplies checklist covers backpack basics — pair it with your teacher's grade list at /back-to-school.

What every family packing list should include
Carry-on or day bag: one spare outfit per child, snacks they will eat, water, wipes, and any daily medicine.
Entertainment beats extra clothes — download shows before flights and road trips. A headphone splitter saves fights over one tablet.
Sun and safety: kids sunscreen, hats with straps, and an ID wristband with your phone number in crowded places.
Flying with kids — carry-on vs checked
Long flights: the child's backpack holds entertainment, snacks, spare outfit, comfort item, and sleep gear — never check the stuffed animal.
Checked luggage: daily outfits, backup socks and underwear, second shoes, pajamas, and a flat duffle for souvenirs home.
Hotel room: USB night light for unfamiliar bathrooms, plus any daily meds kept in the parent bag.
Camping with kids vs summer camp
Camping with kids means your family tent — pack kids sleeping bags, warm layers, and camp chairs. Parents handle cooking and setup.
Summer camp means your child stays without you — labeled clothes, shower shoes, flashlight, and no electronics. Use our summer camp list for Scout and sleepaway stays.
Disney and theme parks with kids
Park days are marathons — broken-in shoes matter more than cute outfits. Bring ponchos for afternoon storms, refillable bottles, and a portable charger.
Pack light in the park bag: snacks, sunscreen, autograph book, and skip bulky costume props that security may turn away.
Quick planning tips
- Pack kids clothes in packing cubes by child — color coding saves morning chaos.
- Lay out the carry-on kids bag the night before; put medicines and comfort items in last so they stay on top.
- Let school-age kids pack from a printed list — then do a quick parent check before zipping.
