Hospital bag packing list

Mom, baby, partner — packed by bag, not one long list

Tell us about your birth plan below — we surface labor essentials, postpartum recovery items, baby going-home gear, and what your hospital likely already provides. Check items off as you pack, or print a section for your partner.

Pack around week 36–38

Most parents finish the bag in the third trimester. Keep it by the door so you can grab it when contractions start.

Install the car seat before labor

Hospitals require a rear-facing infant seat before discharge. Practice installing it in your car — not in the parking lot.

Bring ID and insurance on day one

Admission needs your photo ID and insurance card. Put them in an easy-to-reach pouch in your labor bag.

Skip what the hospital already has

Gowns, heavy pads, diapers, and wipes are usually stocked. Use our Hospital usually provides tab so you do not overpack.

Personalize your list

We adjust items for vaginal vs C-section birth, feeding plans, twins, and your partner's bag.

Not medical advice

This packing list is for general planning only. Every hospital and pregnancy is different. Confirm what your birth center provides, what you are allowed to eat during labor, and when to come in with your care team — not from a website checklist.

Moving or college next?

Life does not pause after the hospital. If you are also planning a move or a dorm move-in, we have separate checklists for those. Moving checklist → · College dorm list →

Common questions

When should I pack my hospital bag? +
Most expecting parents pack between weeks 36 and 38 of pregnancy — or earlier if you are at higher risk of early labor. Keep the bag near your front door and add last-minute items (keys, phone charger, medications) when you leave.
What sections are in this hospital bag list? +
Six bags: Mom during labor, Mom after birth, Baby going home, Partner, Last-minute grab list, and what hospitals usually provide. Pick the tab that matches what you are packing right now.
Does the list change for a C-section? +
Yes. Choose C-section at the top and we add high-waist underwear, front-opening tops, and optional belly support — and hide items meant only for vaginal recovery.
What should my partner pack? +
Their own clothes for 1–2 days, snacks, phone charger, toiletries, and a printed call list. Open the Partner tab for the full list — or turn it off if you are packing alone.
What does the baby need for discharge? +
A properly installed rear-facing car seat is required. Bring one or two going-home outfits in newborn and 0–3 month sizes, plus a hat and blanket for the ride home.
Can I print this hospital packing list? +
Yes. Tap Print section for the bag you are packing, or Full list for everything at once. Choose Save as PDF in your print dialog.
Can I share the list with my partner? +
Yes. Tap Share link to copy a URL with your checkmarks, feeding choice, and custom items. Anyone with the link sees the same list on their phone.
Is this medical advice? +
No. This is a general packing guide based on common hospital practices in the United States. Always follow your doctor, midwife, and hospital instructions for your pregnancy and birth plan.
