Road trip packing list

  • Pack in zones: trunk for emergency gear and cooler, cabin for chargers and snacks, one small overnight duffel per person for motel stops.
  • Set days on the road below so clothing and toiletries scale — then finish Before you leave (oil, tires, spare, offline maps) before you load.
  • Traveling with kids? Use the family road trip list for car seats, backseat snacks, and entertainment.

Before you pack the car

Finish these four, then use the checklist below for the full car kit, cooler, and overnight bag.

  1. Oil, coolant, tire pressure — and confirm spare, jack, and lug wrench
  2. First-night lodging booked; offline maps downloaded
  3. Daily meds and glasses staged in the cabin (not the trunk)
  4. Jump starter / cables, tire inflator, cooler iced, overnight duffels packed

Tips for the drive

  • A portable jump starter and 12V tire inflator cover the two most common roadside fails — dead battery and low PSI.
  • Load overnight bags last so hotel check-in does not mean unpacking the whole trunk.
  • Keep meds, glasses, and a grab bag in the cabin — heat and buried luggage in the trunk are classic trip-killers.

Common questions

What should be on a road trip packing list? +
Car docs, jump starter or cables, tire kit plus inflator, warning triangle, emergency water, first aid, cooler snacks, USB charger, phone mount, sunglasses, overnight duffels, and clothes for your nights away.
How is this different from packing for a flight? +
You can bring liquids and bulkier gear, but you need roadside safety items and a cooler. Airline weight limits matter less; reachability and car zones matter more.
What road trip snacks should I pack? +
Cabin snacks within reach (protein plus something fun), ice packs in the cooler, and a small non-perishable stash in the emergency bin. Trash bags stay in the door pocket.
Do I need a separate list if I have kids? +
Yes for car seats, spare outfits, and backseat entertainment — open our road trip packing list with kids. Adults-only trips can stay on this page.
Can I print this road trip checklist? +
Yes — check off items, then Print / Save as PDF. Before you leave tasks print with the rest so you can tape the list to the fridge.
